utilize Nvidia Tegra for its upcoming Smartphone

HTC Corp., a leading maker of smartphones and other handsets, is projected to utilize Nvidia Tegra system-on-chip (SoC) for a new cell phone that is due to be out in the second half of 2009. According to an analyst, HTC will not be the only company to utilize Tegra SoC this year.

Nvidia Tegra line of SoCs for handsets and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) was announced in early June, 2008. The product family was not exactly a success for Nvidia: despite of the fact that the company expected handset makers to start adopting Tegra by the end of 2008, it now seems that the first cell phones featuring the SoCs will be out only in the second half of 2009.

Nvidia needs Tegra to boost its revenue and profitability amid global economic slump and rapidly decreasing revenue streams from personal computer core-logic business. Fortunately for the company, there will be more handset makers to adopt Tegra, according to the analyst.

Tax relief for IT firms in India

In a move that will significantly ease the tax burden on India's biggest information technology companies, the government has decided
to amend the law relating to tax exemption for units operating out of special economic zones (SEZs).

SEZs set up by IT majors like Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) under the parent companies will soon be able to enjoy 100% tax exemption on profits on a par with those set up as separate entities.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is also handling the finance ministry, has agreed to change the relevant norms under the Income Tax Act, a commerce department official has said. The finance ministry will soon issue a notification changing rules under Section 10AA (7) of the Income Tax Act, which will allow all SEZ units to be treated as separate entities and thus be eligible for 100% tax exemption on profits for the first five years of operation.

Airtel Deploys Comverse SMSC Router Network

According to Bharti, India's leading and rapidly growing operator with more than 80 million subscribers, by using the Comverse SMS Router solution, they can increase the efficiency of their existing SMS infrastructure and provide a higher quality of service to their customers. The New Area Of 3D Television

One thing is clear, TV manufacturers need something new to get people buying TVs. Over the last couple of years, TV manufacturers have experienced a sales boom as consumers upgrade to digital TVs in anticipation of the government's mandated switch to digital TV broadcasts in February 2009. Eager shoppers have also been upgrading to high-definition TVs as movie studios, cable and satellite operators, and TV broadcasters have begun offering more programming in HD.

But as the economy worsens, the forecast for the TV market is looking grim. The LCD TV market is only expected to grow about 17 percent in terms of units shipped in 2009, according to research firm DisplaySearch. This is down from growth of about 29 percent in 2008. Plasma TV growth is also expected to suffer with the market only expected to grow by about 5 percent in 2009 compared with a 24 percent rise in 2008, DisplaySearch said.

As a result, TV makers are looking for the next hot thing to attract new consumers. And some are hoping 3D TVs could be it.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, four of the top selling TV manufacturers--Samsung Electronics, Sony, LG Electronics and Panasonic--showed off their latest versions of 3D TVs. Panasonic set up a mini-home theater where its 103-inch, plasma 3D screen showed clips from New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth and Walt Disney Pictures' animated film Bolt. They also showed high-definition 3D footage from NBC's broadcast of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Asus G-Panel

Asus took advantage of CES to present some new developments in its range of components including the launch of the G-Panel, a product of the "Republic of Gamers. is a color LCD screen that is placed in two locations 5 1 / 4 inches from the tower to control the various parameters of the machine. Compatible with the latest motherboards from Asus ROG, the G-Panel USB connects to the motherboard and can read the temperature of the processor that the motherboard or chipset including the ability to control the speed of rotation various fans.

Naturally, the frequency parameters can be monitored from this screen, like stress as can be precisely adjusted using the buttons near the screen. Asus plans to market this modern day Rheobus separately at a price not yet available.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 285

NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce GTX 295, and with it reclaimed the overall 3D performance crown from a resurgent AMD. As you may know by now, the dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 295 features a pair of re-worked GT200 GPUs, manufactured using a more advanced 55nm fabrication process than its 65nm predecessor. Looking at the specifications for the individual GPUs used on the GeForce GTX 295, however, revealed something interesting. You see, the GPUs on the GeForce GTX 295 featured a full complement of 240 shader cores, like the former flagship GTX 280, but they had "only" a 448-bit memory interface. The GeForce GTX 280 had a 512-bit interface.

The lowest price we could find was for a Zotac card at stock speeds on eBuyer, which cost just £294.99 inc VAT. However, there are also some overclocked cards doing the rounds. For example, Overclockers has a BFG card with a 712MHz core, a 1.62GHz shader clock and 1.332GHz (2,664MHz effective) memory memory available for pre-order, although it's not cheap at £379.49 inc VAT. As standard, the GeForce GTX 285 has a 648MHz core clock, with 1.476GHz stream processors and 1.242GHz (2.484GHz effective) memory, plus a 512-bit memory interface.

block Non-IMEI number mobile phones

he Indian government is planning to impose a penalty on all GSM operators for not disconnecting mobile services on handsets without a 16-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has shot off a notice to operators warning about the per-day fine. The DoT said that when a penalty is imposed, it will be doubled up every 15 days until 15 April if the operators fail to follow the DoT's order.

The GSM operators have provided connections to about 25 million Chinese handsets that don't carry the IMEI code. These handsets can be easily tracked. Calls made or received through them can also be intercepted lawfully, showing the provider's details.

The telcos store all their subscribers' numbers in an Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to avoid unauthorised usage of stolen handsets. Some operators haven't yet installed EIRs on their network. The DoT has set a deadline of 15 April for operators to install EIRs.

The telcos feel that subscribers using cheap Chinese phones won't be able to afford buy new phones. But to ensure security, the telcos earlier made an alternative proposal, to install software in non-IMEI numbers.

The GSM lobby, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has also demonstrated software to security agencies. But IB has found an error in the software which allows anyone to manipulate the genuine IMEI numbers.

Google to close engineering offices

Recession seems to have started hurting search giant Google. In a statement on its official blog, Google Senior Vice President, Engineering and Research, Alan Eustace said the company was eliminating some engineering jobs at various locations across the world.

Eustace said that Google had been hiring "outstanding engineers in a wide mix of countries. Having offices distributed around the globe is critical to Google's long-term success, and today we have thousands of engineers working in 40 offices in more than 20 countries."

"It has enabled us to make significant improvements in our products and attract more users globally. It has also presented unique challenges. The most difficult of these being to coordinate our efforts across all geographies, and provide engineers with significant, meaningful projects that make a real difference to people's lives."

Eustace further said that the company in last September asked engineers in Phoenix, Arizona to move to other offices and now it is "doing the same thing in Austin, Texas; Trondheim, Norway; and Lulea, Sweden.

"Our strong desire is to keep as many of these 70 engineering employees at Google as possible. However, we do recognise the upheaval and heartache that these changes may have on Google families, and that we may not be able to keep 100 per cent of these exceptional employees."

ElcomSoft Employs ATI and NVIDIA

ElcomSoft Co. Ltd. puts ATI and NVIDIA hardware to work accelerating the recovery of Wi-Fi passwords. The newly released Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor 1.0 benefits from the ability of last-generation video cards manufactured by ATI and NVIDIA to munch numbers faster, allowing its users torecover Wi-Fi passwords faster than ever before.

Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor helps system administrators to audit wireless network security by attempting to recover the original WPA/WPA2 PSK password encrypting Wi-Fi communications. The technology offloads parts of computational-heavy processing onto the fast and highly scalable processors featured in the latest ATI and NVIDIA boards. When one or more compatible ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards are present, the patent-pending GPU acceleration technology kicks in automatically.

Google decided to abandon the six projects,

Google has decided to abandon several projects. The editor is a real breeding ground for testing new services, but some work better than others. We know that Google regularly launches beta versions which are then tested for at least several months. Some services, like Gmail, have been a real success, but it is not obvious to everyone else.

The publisher therefore abandoned six projects:
  • Google Video
  • Google Catalog Search
  • Google Notebook
  • Dodgeball
  • Jaiku
  • Google Mashup Editor

We understand that Google Video has stopped because the firm has bought YouTube, whose health itself. Google Catalog Search has given rise thereafter to Book Search, but again, the service has not had success. Catalog Search is also closed since yesterday.

Google Notebook, which allowed the taking of notes, will also close its doors, but not immediately. In a first time, users who have already recorded content can still access, but Google stops the active development of this service.

Apple interested in NVIDIA Ion?

The hardware platform around which could turn the development of the new Mac mini Apple seems to be Ion NVIDIA, the solution the giant Californian has created for use with Atom processors.

According to a series of indiscretions that bounce on the next generation of Mac mini, therefore, to host an internal integrity chipset NVIDIA 9400M (the same on all existing systems for Apple laptops) and an Intel Atom 330 dual-core solution to 1.6 GHz operating frequency of 533MHz and the FSB.

Apple would have some time to work on this platform: items corridor indicate that the Colossus of Cupertino has received prototypes long before other NVIDIA partners that have expressed interest in Ion.

The use of an Atom processor for a system like the Mac Mini could also buy optical effect in the future: with the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" in the market Apple will have the technology required to exploit the hardware acceleration of the GPU Open through CL. This would offset the performance of the Atom processor and then give way to Apple to create an economic system but still flexible.

The interest in the Apple platform Ion could, however, be quite different mold. The characteristics of the new NVIDIA platform, in fact, appear well reconciled with a device as Apple TV, where the low consumption and low noise operation are key elements that must be reconciled with the ability to manage content in high definition. All tasks that Ion is able to play.

introduce Eee Phone, an easy-to-use smartphone

Asustek Computer, a leading maker of computer components as well as mobile computers, has confirmed its intention to introduce an easy-to-use smartphone under its Asus Eee brand. The device will not only be able to serve as a handset, but will also be able to control other Asus devices.

According to Jonney Shih, the chairman of Asustek Computer, personal computers will become not only a part of daily routine, but will go into virtually any device or item. In order to control all of those devices, one product will be needed, says Mr. Shih in an interview with the New York Times news-paper. In fact, that device is in the development: the low-cost Asus Eee smartphone.

"That Eee phone may become an interactive control. The whole digital network is the key," claims Mr. Shih.

Unfortunately, the chairman of Asustek did not real any details regarding the Eee Phone besides the fact that the device is currently being designed and will have capabilities to control other devices, which naturally points to support of wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth.

offer Web Callback application with DACX Ameyo

Drishti-Soft Solutions, a leading provider of Communications solutions, has announced that it will now provide Web Callback feature with its All-in-One Communications Suite- DACX Ameyo, to Enterprises to help them increase their conversion rates through the Internet. This application will be provided to businesses on request basis.

Research has shown that customers prefer telephonic interactions over email interactions; they would not prefer putting time and efforts into contacting the customer care agent directly. Bill Gates has rightly said recently- "In the future there will not be any significant websites that do not contain the Call Me Now capability. The question is- How significant do you want your web site to be?"

When an online visitor clicks on the web callback widget and leaves his details (name, address, phone number etc.), the system immediately initiates a callback to the web-visitor with a screen pop containing the relevant details and connects him/her to the call center. This is a more proactive method to reach out to potential customers.

Video Game Sales Top $21B in 2008

ll throughout 2008, as the economy went from bad to worse, video games continued to sell at record levels, boosted by the popularity of the Nintendo Wii and blockbuster games like "Grand Theft Auto IV."

Still, there are some signs that the recession is nipping at the heels of video games. The priciest console, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, continues to lag behind its less expensive rivals, the Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

According to data from market researcher NPD Group, Americans bought $21.33 billion worth of video game systems, software and accessories last year. This is a big jump from the previous year's roughly $18 billion, but slightly below the $22 billion that NPD had estimated as late as November.

Lynnfield CPU and P55 chipset delayed by Intel

Intel has decided to postpone the departure of Lynnfield processors and accompanying chipset, the P55 for August or September. According to the economic situation, it might even Intel is delaying the release of more of these new processors. Initially, these models have been announced for the end of July. This delay was decided to support the manufacturers of motherboards, leaving them with large stocks of motherboards to sell because of reduced demand following the economic crisis.

Lynnfield and P55 were both set to launch by the end of July, but according to the Taiwanese motherboard makers, delays will now almost certainly ensue due to an Intel inventory glut and, surprise, surprise, the credit crunch.

Remember, the Lynnfield are declensions midrange Nehalem and use the LGA-1056 socket. After the release of Intel P55 chipset, the Santa Clara giant will retire chipsets P45 and P43 and slip the other chipsets in the series 4 to the future. Note that the first Havendale ES (engineered sample) will be sent to manufacturers of motherboards in February.

Intel's Ibex Peak is P55, H55,

According to several Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Intel's forthcoming Ibex Peak will not only be introduced on the P55 chipset, but will be spanned across five individual mainstream and entry-level chipsets for its 45nm Lynnfield and Havendale processors. The entire lineup will include the mainstream P55 and H55 as well as the high-end H57, P57, and Q57 which will all launch in Q1 2010 while the P55 exclusively launches in Q3 later this year.

One of the major highlights of the three high-end chipsets will be the introduction of a new technology known as Braidwood. In short terms, it is basically a revision of Intel's Turbo Memory which was first seen on the Santa Rosa mobile Centrino platform in May 2007 and later in its second revision on the Montevina platform in July 2008.

The technology attempts to decrease hard drive usage by moving frequently accessed data over to flash memory which ultimately allows for faster boot times and more power efficiency. This time, however, the memory chips will also feature a dedicated NVRAM controller to the system and storage buffers to allow for read and write speeds available only on solid state disks.

Skype Software along with Nokia

Internet calling company Skype has secured a deal with Nokia under
which the world's biggest phone maker will preload Skype software into
some of its new smartphones starting from the third quarter of this
year.

Skype, whose technology has allowed legions of consumers to make
practically free long-distance calls over the Internet on fixed lines,
has been moving into the mobile arena with deals with operators such
as Hutchison Whampoa's 3.

"We believe that mobile is incredibly important to our future," Skype
Chief Executive Josh Silverman told Reuters in an interview at the
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the industry's biggest gathering.

Skype software is also available to download onto mobile phones after
they have been bought, but is then less integrated into features like
address books, making it less convenient.

Most mobile operators are wary of Skype, fearing they will lose
revenue through consumers paying little or nothing for calls, but
Silverman said 3 had actually seen its average revenue rise by 20
percent for consumers using Skype phones.

Wordpress refuses to close the fake blog

The Japanese company Canon camera specialist, is the victim of a new
phenomenon: it faces a user opened a blog somewhat satirical parody.
Specifically, the adviser Canon, Chuck Westfall is the target of
online newspaper Fake Chuck Westfall Blog.

Publisher Wordpress.com, which hosts the blog in question, received a
letter (PDF) calling for the abolition of user account. According to
Canon, Fake Chuck Westfall would not simply use the official logo of
the company, but have written several threats of physical violence
against the original Mr. Westfall, while violating his privacy by
mentioning the name of his wife and daughter. Moreover, according to
Canon, the theme graphic Fake Chuck Westfall specifically aimed to
deceive the user.

Upon receipt of this request, the publisher Automatic contacted the
author of Fake Chuck Westfall in advising him to withdraw the official
logo of Canon and softened its tone. Automatic however, refuses to
close this blog and state that the employee Canon publicly refers to
her private life on a page of its website where it mentions the name
of his wife and daughter. Automattic aileurs believes that through its
name, its URL and its satirical content, the blog can not be regarded
as a source of confusion for the user.

New attacks on IE7

Cybercriminals have begun attacking a critical hole that Microsoft
patched in its Internet Explorer 7 browser last week, corroborating
the company's warning that the vulnerability would be easy to exploit.

The exploit code is spread through a booby trapped Word document that
ultimately installs information-stealing malware on unpatched
machines, according to researchers. The vulnerability is one of two IE
flaws Microsoft patched last week. The company warned at the time that
"consistent exploit code" for the remote execution flaws was likely.

The attack is fairly primitive at the moment, because it involves the
spamming of Word documents. Security experts expect that to change.

"There is absolutely nothing preventing attackers from using the
exploit in a drive-by attack (and we can, unfortunately, expect that
this will happen very soon)," Bojan Zdrnja, a handler at the Sans
Internet Storm Center wrote here. He went on to say the exploit code
was the result of reverse engineering Microsoft's patch.

The exploit code does have its innovations, however. It funnels
pilfered data to a website in China through an encrypted channel, for
instance. It also uses heavily obfuscated shell code and garbage
collection, presumably to cover tracks.

great timesaving tricks as well.

Timesavers for everyday Mac use

1. Save time sending files
If you have a group of files or folders that you need to transfer by
email, FTP or over iChat, rather than adding them individually
multiple-select them and choose File > Create Archive in 10.4 or
Compress in 10.5. The resulting zip file will contain all the items
and can be added with a single drag and drop.

2. Find files faster
Select File > New Smart Folder and enter criteria for the kinds of
files the folder should keep track of. For example, 'all images opened
this month', making it quicker to find what you want.

3. Save time turning your Mac on and off
In System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule, set a regular time
for your Mac to boot up and shut down. For example, you can tell the
schedule to start up your Mac just before you start work.

go."

AMD RV740 is Radeon HD 4770 / 4750,

VR-Zone learns that AMD is planning to launch two new mainstream cards
based on 40nm RV740 in May, a month after releasing the high end 55nm
RV790 cards. There will be two versions; Radeon HD 4770 (RV740XT) and
Radeon HD 4750 (RV740PRO).the new cards will be based on a 40nm
graphics processing unit, but will be part of the company's current
HD4000-series. AMD is expected to launch two new models, based on the
same graphics processing unit. The first, which will boast an RV740PRO
GPU, will be equipped with 1GB of GDDR3 memory and will come with a
core clock of 700MHz. This card will be branded as the Radeon HD 4750,
while the one based on the RV740XT GPU will be known as the Radeon HD
4770. This one will also boast a 700MHz GPU, but provide 512MB of
GDDR5 memory, clocked at 800MHz.
The chip is etched to recall, for the first time in 40 nanometers, and
additionally includes calculating 640 units and 32 texture units. The
ATI Radeon HD 4770 would be based on the RV740XT to board 512 MB
memory 128-bit GDDR5 cadencée at 800 MHz. The Radeon HD 4750 based on
a RV740PRO for its part would have 1 GB of GDDR3 memory. These two
cards benefit for the first time a three-phase supply of energy saving
and a GPU running at 700 MHz.

The GeForce GTS 250, which is nothing more than a simple GeForce 9800
GTX + fame, will be launched on March 3, the opening day of CeBIT. The
selling price of this card would be an opportunity down, we are
talking about $ 130. The GeForce GTS 240 would be much the same as the
GeForce 9800 GT, but little novelty, the frequencies would be boosted
to 675 MHz for the GPU, 1688 MHz for calculation units and 2200 MHz
for memory (instead of 600, 1500 and 1800 Mhz).

Sun Establishes First Open Source Standard

Sun Microsystems today announced the release of the world's first
generic communication protocol between a Key Manager and an encrypting
device into an open source community. This latest effort in the Open
Storage initiative gives customers greater choice, value and
flexibility through the resources in open source communities, like the
growing Storage community within OpenSolaris. Today's announcement
sets Sun apart and enables partners to adopt this protocol to securely
handle encryption keys without additional licensing. The protocol is
implemented as a complete toolkit and is downloadable from the
OpenSolaris website

Governments, finance, healthcare, retail and other vertical markets
need to comply with current regulatory laws that create mandates to
protect sensitive stored data. To support these requirements, this
protocol is available to customers using the Sun StorageTek KMS 2.0
Key Manager and Sun StorageTek T9840D, T10000A, T10000B Enterprise
Drives, as well as Sun StorageTek HP LTO4 drives shipped in Sun
libraries. A number of additional partners are developing products
based on this protocol, including EMC, whose RSA security division has
talked about releasing it as an option on their RKM Key Manager.

"Open Storage solutions allows customers to break free from the chains
of proprietary hardware and software and this new protocol extends
this lifeline into the expensive and highly fragmented encryption
market," said Jason Schaffer, senior director, storage product
management, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Open source equals customer value
for encryption solutions and Sun now offers the only solution on the
market that works across multiple vendors and suppliers."

SiK introduces the Pimp automobile charger

Accessory vendor SiK has announced the Pimp automobile charger and
audio accessory. The unfortunately-named Pimp—which apparently gets
that name by adding a P to the name of the company's older, similar
Imp accessory—charges your iPod or iPhone from your car's accessory
(cigarette-lighter) jack while providing a 3.5mm audio output for
playing your iPod or iPhone's audio through your car stereo.

The aluminum-and-stainless-steel Pimp connects to your iPod or
iPhone's dock-connector port both to provide power to the player and
to grab the dock-connector port's higher-quality, line-level audio
signal. The accessory includes a three-foot cable and works with both
iPhone models as well as all dockable iPods since the iPod mini. (It
provides power via USB circuitry, so it cannot charge third-generation
and earlier iPods that require power via FireWire circuitry.)
According to SiK, the Pimp includes a replaceable fuse and power
filtering.

The $55 Pimp is currently available for pre-order directly from the
company's Web site, and should be available for purchase from other
vendors "soon."

Flying Mac released FarFinder iPhone client

Flying Mac has announced the release of FarFinder for iPhone, the
native iPhone client for their Macintosh remote access product.
FarFinder lets iPhone users browse, view and download their Mac's
files from anywhere. FarFinder also provides access to a Mac's files
from any web browser on any platform - OS X, Windows or Linux.

Features:

FarFinder for iPhone gives users secure access to any Mac running
FarFinder's Mac software. Users have access to the Mac's complete file
system, including connected network drives such as Apple's Time
Capsule.
Users can view all documents the iPhone supports, including iWork
files, Microsoft Office documents and PDFs, with additional support
for RTF, RTFD and web archives. A slideshow function provides easy
image viewing, and can display image files such as Photoshop which the
iPhone would not normally handle. The iPhone can stream music and even
video from the Mac if bandwidth allows.
FarFinder provides a Mac-like experience, with Finder-style icon
and list views, custom file icons (where not forbidden by Apple) and
quick access to Finder sidebar items. Spotlight is also available,
allowing the user to easily search the whole Mac. Advanced features
include displaying hidden files, showing file extensions and opening
packages.
Files and whole folders can be downloaded to the iPhone for times
when there is no network available, and for easy access to
frequently-used documents and large media files.
Additional features include sending files and folders by email
without needing to download them first, and the ability to look
through the remote Mac's iSight camera. This latter feature is
particularly popular with users.
FarFinder for iPhone replaces FarFinder's Mobile Safari interface,
which gave iPhone users access to a subset of the features described
above. The native application delivers not only additional features,
but also a huge performance and usability increase.

Cisco introduces its first Servers

Cisco Systems Inc. wants a bigger chunk of the corporate computing
market, and plans to start selling servers in competition with old
partners like Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.

The servers are part of a package put together by Cisco and partners
like BMC Software and VMware Inc. to harness the power of a recent
technology called "virtualization" that lets one computer act like
several.

San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco is the world's largest maker of computer
networking gear, but Monday's announcement greatly expands its
ambitions in the corporate "data center" market. It's moving from
selling the switches that allow the computers to talk to each other to
selling virtually entire data centers, in conjunction with its
partners.

In a videoconference, Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers emphasized
that its "Unified Computing System" is not an attempt to move into the
commodity server market.

"We have very little interest in the product space," Chambers said.
"We're after: `How does it tie together?'"

Chambers called the unified computing product the biggest step for
Cisco since it added switches to its original router products through
the acquisition of Crescendo Communications Inc. in 1993.

Since then, the company has used the cash generated by its enormously
successful computer networking gear — it had $29.5 billion on hand in
its last quarterly report — to buy up numerous companies, adding
consumer gadgets and cable-TV equipment to its portfolio. This time,
however, it's not diversifying through an acquisition, but by building
its own products.

IDC analyst Michelle Bailey said Cisco isn't trying to take on HP and
IBM in the broader market for servers, but rather is focusing on a
certain set of very large customers. Their data centers, for instance,
keep track of customer accounts, run large Web sites or deliver movies
to PCs or cell phones. That's a $20 billion business annually.

Transcend new 16GB SDHC HD video cards

Transcend Information, Inc. (Transcend), one of the world's largest
producers of flash memory cards, today announced the arrival of its
newest memory card series –SDHC HD Video Cards, designed specifically
for recording, storing, and playing back high definition video
content.

Today's latest camcorders record digital video at extremely high
resolutions without compromising image quality. However, the improved
clarity of HD video requires a significantly greater amount of storage
space when recording. Transcend's SDHC HD Video Cards are fully
equipped to handle the increased capacity, speed, and reliability
requirements of HD video. When recording in high quality 1920x1080
AVCHD format at 13Mbps compression rate, a 16GB Transcend SDHC HD
Video Card can store 2 hours and 40 minutes of video content.
Moreover, if slightly lower quality settings are used, the same 16GB
card can record up to six full hours of high definition video! For
added convenience, the front of each Transcend SDHC HD Video card
features a useful space for labeling and organizing recorded video
content.

Transcend's SDHC HD Video Cards are also fully Class 6 compliant,
which means they provide extremely fast data transfer speeds
(guaranteed minimum write speed of 6MB/s) to assure quick reaction
time when used in digital cameras and camcorders. Modern 10 megapixel
digital cameras and HD camcorders continuously save large amounts of
high-resolution image data to the memory card during use, and the
speed at which cameras can save this information directly affects its
performance. Transcend's high-speed Class 6 SDHC HD Video Cards cater
directly to digital camera and HD camcorder users by allowing faster
image and video saving for improved overall camera response. Now
available in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities, Transcend's SDHC HD Video
Cards are fully backed by Transcend's comprehensive Lifetime Warranty.

Download Pre-Alpha Chrome browser available

On 2 September, when Google unveiled its browser Chrome with a
JavaScript engine fast, much regretted that the software is developed
for the Windows system. However, last January we learned that the
versions for Mac OS X and Linux were being developed and should be
revealed in the first half of this year.

Last January, Brian Rakowski, Product management at Google, confirmed
this information and added that these versions were "not capable of
displaying web pages correctly. But it is still very rudimentary in
terms of user experience."

A few weeks ago, the first screenshot of the version for Mac OS X runs
on the Web and now we learn that the developers of the project
Chromium just to provide a pre-alpha version for Linux and more
specifically the Ubuntu system. Preliminary tests performed SunSpider
JavaScript, including by Tombuntu magazine, Chrome would be 4.7 times
faster than Firefox 3 and 2.9 times faster than Firefox 3.1 beta 3.

OLPC to use ARM processors on the XO-2?

The OLPC foundation has hinted that it might be dropping x86
processors in their next generation XO-2 laptops in favor of an ARM
based solution. Apparently the move is aimed at improving battery life
while cutting costs, using a system-on-chip design, but this could
also come at the expense of losing compatibility with Microsoft
Windows operating systems.

"The current XO-1 shows an average consumption of 5 Watts. Many people
believe that it is incredibly low, but we believe it is our main
problem, "said Ed McNierney, technical manager of the project, the
magazine PC World.

All those ARM chip providers should announce their support of the OLPC
XO-2 project and they could start right away showing whatever
prototypes that they have ready running experimentally builds of
different types of embedded Linux be it the upcoming Ubuntu for ARM,
Angstrom Linux or even best running adapted Android Linux
implementations.

Then current market leaders in the Netbook segment can one after the
other announce that they too will be ready to be part of the ARM
paradigm change. Whoever of an interchangeable mix among Asus, MSI,
Acer, Gigabyte, Hasee, Quanta and the other giants need to come
forward and confirm that yes, they do have working prototypes of the
ARM laptops using some of the different available options and that
they will be interested to use XO-2 technologies as soon as possible.

Red Hat's new KVM with high availability

Red Hat has announced a new portfolio of visualization solutions, including a new standalone hypervisor that will include Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) technology.Qumranet is the inventor and key maintainer of KVM, the only virtualization technology that is fully incorporated into the Linux kernel. Red Hat views KVM as the next generation of virtualization technology it combines support for the latest hardware virtualization capabilities and the rapid feature development of the Linux kernel into a complete, highly functional, virtualization platform.

Red Hat believes that a strong coupling between the hypervisor and the kernel is a major advantage. Qumranet also developed SolidICE, a high-performance, scalable, desktop virtualization solution built specifically for virtual desktops, not simply a retrofit from server virtualization solutions. SolidICE is designed to enable a user's Windows or Linux desktop to run in a virtual machine that is hosted on a central server.

It is based on the industry-leading Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments (SPICE) protocol, which overcomes key barriers to VDI adoption, including a superior user experience enabled by the SPICE protocol capabilities. SolidICE offers superiority over competition in three aspects:

A user experience indistinguishable from a physical PC (Windows and Linux desktops) via the SPICE remote rendering technology

3-5x cost-performance improvement over retrofitted server actualization solutions

Yank 2.0 update promises Snow Leopard compatibility

Snow Leopard may not arrive until September, but Matterform Media says its Yank universal uninstaller will be ready. Yank 2.0, released this week, offers compatibility with the forthcoming OS X 10.6 release.

Matterform describes Yank as an all-purpose uninstaller for OS X. The application monitors your hard drive for changes when new software is installed, logging all the files that get added or modified. It uses that information later when you turn to Yank to uninstall software.

In addition to Snow Leopard compatibility, Yank 2.0, which also runs on OS X 10.5, adds an Auto-Launch feature that automatically starts monitoring a hard drive when you install new software.

Yank costs $20. Existing users who bought Yank after September 1, 2008 can upgrade to version 2.0 for free; otherwise, the upgrade costs $12.—Philip Michaels

AT&T Adds 2.4 Million Subscribers with Apple's iPhone

AT&T said it racked up 2.4 million new iPhone activations in the second quarter, with the bulk of the additions coming from the wireless carrier's launch of Apple's iPhone 3GS on June 19.

The first day of the iPhone 3GS launch was "the best sales day ever" for AT&T's retail and online stores, noted Chief Financial Officer Richard Lindner. Moreover, 35 percent of all iPhone buyers in the quarter "were customers new to AT&T," he said.

iPhone Trade-Offs

Still, surging iPhone demand isn't without its downside, given that AT&T is heavily subsidizing initial device sales. The company said its wireless service margin fell nearly three percentage points year-over-year to 38.3 percent in the quarter. Without the increased acquisition costs associated with the iPhone 3GS launch, AT&T estimates that its service margin would have been more than 40 percent.

Nevertheless, AT&T is more than willing to trade off short-term margin gains in exchange for a long-term boost in the average revenue per user (ARPU) that it receives from each iPhone customer over time.

"As we start to benefit from recurring ARPUs from this customer base, the margins will grow," Lindner said. "But it is difficult to predict" what the ARPU will be in "the next quarter or two given that we have been surprised by the strength of demand."

Some industry observers worry that AT&T's wireless fortunes are too heavily tied to its iPhone exclusivity agreement with Apple and wonder what would happen should the deal come to an end. But Lindner pointed out that AT&T's smartphone growth isn't limited to iPhone sales.

AT&T recorded a 3.5 million increase in the number of 3G handsets with QWERTY or virtual keyboards running on its network in the June-ended quarter, Lindner observed. This resulted in a 37.2 percent increase in wireless data revenues to $3.4 billion, he said.

Blackboard Adds iPhone & Mobile Web Platform

Blackboard Inc. a global leader in education technology, today announced a major step forward in its efforts to support students’ mobile lifestyle with the acquisition of Terriblyclever Design, LLC, makers of MobilEdu, the category defining suite of iPhone™ and mobile web applications for education.

MobilEdu allows education institutions to deliver a rich set of campus life services and content to mobile devices, uniquely branded for each institution, to better connect current students, parents, faculty, prospective students and alumni to the campus experience in a way that wasn’t possible before.

Microsoft agrees to unbundle Explorer

Microsoft has agreed to open up Windows to different Internet browsers in order to fend off European Union litigation, the European Commission announced Friday.

"Microsoft has proposed a consumer ballot screen as a solution to the pending antitrust case about the tying of Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser with Windows," it said in a statement.

It said computer users would be able to "easily install competing Web browsers, set one of those browsers as a default, and disable Internet Explorer" from the ballot screen.

"We believe that if ultimately accepted, this proposal will fully address the European competition law issues relating to the inclusion of Internet Explorer in Windows and interoperability with our high-volume products," Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said in a release.

"This would mark a big step forward in addressing a decade of legal issues and would be good news for European consumers and our partners in the industry."

The commission, Europe's top competition watchdog, opened a new front in its epic anti-trust battle with Microsoft in January.

It hit the company with fresh charges of unfairly squashing competition by bundling its Internet Explorer Web browser into its ubiquitous Windows personal computer operating system.

Under the plan, rival browsers including Firefox (Mozilla), Google's Chrome or Opera by Norway's Opera Software will now be placed before consumers at the point when they set up a new computer's operating preferences.

webOS update for Palm Pre owners

Palm has released webOS 1.1 as a free update to all existing Palm Pre owners. The update features slight enhancements and UI improvements across the board, a handy new feature that reminds you of specific tasks related to someone when a call from them comes in (so you never miss any opportunity to remind that one friend how much he owes you), and a new application from Sprint that allows you to watch or listen to live NFL games on the Pre itself.

Not bad for a free update, huh? Still not satisfied? Well, there’s also this—it reestablishes the Pre’s iPhone-like connection with iTunes that allows it to synchronize media from Apple’s jukebox application. Or as Palm delicately notes in the change log, it “resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with [the] latest version of iTunes (8.2.1).” Hah, that’s one way to put it.

Earlier this month, Apple released iTunes 8.2.1, describing a change that “addresses an issue with verifying Apple devices.” Immediately thereafter, Pre owners discovered that their devices would no longer sync with iTunes. It had been widely speculated that Apple would yank the rug from under the Pre following the publication of an Apple tech note in June that noted Apple “does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players.”

Palm’s method of making the Pre work with iTunes is to mask the device as an iPod classic, thus enabling iTunes to treat it as one of its own. So how long will it take Apple to drop another iTunes update that once again severs all ties between the two mismatched devices? My guess: not too long. Which raises the question, why is Palm going about it the way they are? Why participate in a cat-and-mouse game where your opponent clearly has the upper hand?

Garmin-Asus nüvifone now available in Asia

Garmin Ltd. and ASUSTeK Computer Inc., announced that the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 will go on sale in Taiwan on July 27, and in Singapore and Malaysia by the end of August. Also in August, the Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20 will go on sale in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

“We can’t wait for our customers to start using a nüvifone,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “Our lives are all about location. The nüvifone is designed around that premise and that’s what differentiates it from the myriad of other phones on the market.”

“Whether it’s talking and navigating simultaneously, geotagging a photograph or navigating to an address on the web, the nüvifone seamlessly links navigation with other commonly performed activities,” said Benson Lin, Asus Vice President and General Manager of Handheld Business Group.

The Navigation Phone

The Garmin-Asus nüvifone series is a breakthrough product line that integrates navigation and location based services (LBS) like no other phone in the market today. It is ideal for those seeking an all-in-one, LBS-centric touchscreen phone, mobile web-browser and personal navigator. The nüvifone G60 and M20 have touchscreen displays that feature three primary icons – “Call,” “Search” and “View Map.” Customers can easily scroll through the other icons by swiping their finger across the displays, and a built-in accelerometer allows every screen to be viewed in either portrait or landscape orientation.

Microsoft Wave provides some cool stuff

A new site, Microsoft Wave from Microsoft's UK team that does nothing but showcase some of the cooler tech the company develops. You've heard of most of these before, but the site is a good place to catch it all under one roof. Right now, you'll find details of the following:

Microsoft Tag
Surface
Worldwide Telescope
Project Natal
Photosynth
Songsmith
Live Mesh
Deep Zoom

...and so on.

Yeah, it's a marketing ploy. Frankly, it's already sort of gummed up with a bunch filler like already-released Xbox 360 and Games for Windows titles. Yeah, Age of Empires III is great and all that, but it's sort of old news. But it should also serve to highlight some of the more interesting things Microsoft has out there, like WorldWide Telescope, that more people really should know about.

I have to wonder if Google is going to let them get away with that name, what with their much-ballyhood Google Wave project going public soon. The two are nothing alike, but since when has that stopped a lawsuit?

Free version of Pi Cubed for iPhone and iPod touch launched

Sunset Lake Software today announces the release of Pi Cubed Lite, a free version of its Pi Cubed visual math application for iPhone and iPod touch. Pi Cubed uses an interactive math system that has been designed from the ground up for a touch-based interface. Unlike traditional calculators, Pi Cubed lets you construct mathematical expressions, using an interactive menu system, which are then typeset and evaluated instantly.

Because the full utility of this novel calculation approach is best experienced, rather than described, the free Pi Cubed Lite has been created to introduce more users to the power of this system. The free Lite version has all of the calculation capabilities of the full application, including a diverse range of supported mathematical operations such as logarithms, trigonometric functions, and arbitrary roots.

Also included in the full version is a built-in database of over 150 equations, representing fields that range from finances to fluid mechanics. You can use these equations (with fully annotated variables) for a quick reminder, or you can enter numerical values and directly evaluate the equations.

Finally, the full version has the ability to export user-defined equations in plain text or LaTeX formats, as well as to the external application Grafly for plotting.

Pi Cubed Lite is free, and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store. Pi Cubed for iPhone and iPod touch is available for $9.99 (USD).

Top 10 iPhone Flaws

Even the greatest gadgets have flaws, and the iPhone is certainly no exception. Praise it all you want, but the "Jesus phone" has plenty of little annoyances or nuisances that get under a user's skin. Fortunately, technology is all about workarounds to common problems. So we've not only put together a Top 10 list of iPhone annoyances to vent about, we're also offering solutions (where we can) to fix those pesky iPhone problems we hate so much.

10. Default Apps Can't Be Hidden

The iPhone's start screen is filled with shortcuts to prepackaged applactions that come with your iPhone whether you want them or not--for example, an app for checking stocks whose shortcut can't be removed from the iPhone interface. Despite Apple's insistence, not everyone wants to check the Dow Jones Industrial Average or for that matter the weather, or even use the iPhone's calculator. That the iPhone's prepackaged apps can't be hidden, deleted, or otherwise customized speaks to the stubborn rigidity of Apple.

Ideally: If Apple wanted to fix this annoyance, it would have an "Appearance" option in the Settings menu that would allow users to make unwanted apps disappear without actually deleting them.

Workaround: Isolate undesirable apps on your last home page--that's the quick and dirty method. A more elaborate trick, detailed at Macenstein, stashes apps on a hidden overflow page, though this works only until the iPhone is turned off. Jailbreakers will seek out programs such as Sbsettings or Poof.

9. You Can't Run Pandora or Other Apps in the Background

One of the iPhone's greatest assets is the ability to stream Internet radio stations such as Pandora and Slacker from anywhere with a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Too bad you can't listen to that music while checking e-mail or playing games.

Ideally: In a perfect world, Apple would allow certain apps to run at the same time as others. We understand that Apple's trying to keep the smartphone running smoothly, but if the iPod app can play music in the background, the iPhone's audio apps should be able to do the same.

Microsoft, Yahoo! Change Search Landscape

Yahoo! and Microsoft announced an agreement that will improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers, and deliver sustained innovation to the industry. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

For Web users and advertisers, this deal will accelerate the pace and breadth of innovation by combining both companies’ complementary strengths and search platforms into a market competitor with the scale to fuel sustained development in search and search advertising. Users will find what they care about faster and with more personal relevance. Microsoft’s competitive search platforms will lead to more value for advertisers, better results for web publishers, and increased innovation and efficiency across the Internet.

Under this agreement, Yahoo! will focus on its core business of providing consumers with great experiences with the world’s favorite online destinations and Web products.

“This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users, and the industry. And I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of Internet innovation and development,” said Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz. “Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides. Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities, and mobile experiences.”

Providing a viable alternative to advertisers, this deal will combine Yahoo! and Microsoft search marketplaces so that advertisers no longer have to rely on one company that dominates more than 70 percent of all search. With the addition of Yahoo!’s search volume, Microsoft will achieve the size and scale required to unleash competition and innovation in the market, for consumers as well as advertisers.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the agreement will provide Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, the scale necessary to more effectively compete, attracting more users and advertisers, which in turn will lead to more relevant ads and search results.

“Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company,” said Ballmer. “Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we’ve created breakthrough innovation and features. This agreement with Yahoo! will provide the scale we need to deliver even more rapid advances in relevancy and usefulness. Microsoft and Yahoo! know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search.”

Symantec Corp. announced the Symantec Cyber Threat Analysis Program (CTAP), a comprehensive approach to capture and identify globally pertinent security intelligence, provide localized threat identification and deliver sound remediation and countermeasures to protect critical client information and improve overall security posture. CTAP provides access to one of the largest commercial repositories of cyber security-focused vulnerability data and cyber threat intelligence combined with Symantec’s broad security toolset. Symantec delivers this access through highly skilled analysts placed at a client’s site to strengthen the organization’s defensive posture, while increasing their proactive capabilities.

As an addition to Symantec’s integrated, proven Security Intelligence Services, CTAP is designed to extend the customer’s view of the threat landscape and provide the resources to deliver effective risk mitigation and response efforts on demand. The program leverages Symantec’s extensive Global Intelligence Network and the broad security expertise only Symantec possesses to provide customers with detailed reports and validated intelligence on the attacks, malicious code activity, phishing and spam that organizations experience daily.

Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report Volume XIV, released in April of 2009, demonstrated the extent of today’s cyber security threats. Symantec created more than 1.6 million new malicious code signatures in 2008 and blocked an average of more than 245 million attempted malicious code attacks across the globe each month during 2008. Furthermore, 90 percent of all threats detected by Symantec during the study period attempted to steal confidential information.

“Organizations today face the significant challenge of managing cyber security threats that arrive more quickly, are more sophisticated and allow for minimal time for proactive defense, combined with the pressure of driving down costs and leveraging past investments more effectively to enhance cyber security posture,” said Anil Chakravarthy, senior vice president, Symantec Enterprise Services. “The Symantec Cyber Threat Analysis Program mitigates cyber risk with a comprehensive approach to threat identification, intelligence gathering and validation, and delivers timely response by seasoned professionals to protect critical client information, all supported by specialized tools to enact response.”

NVIDIA Tesla GPU Computing Solutions Selected

NVIDIA today announced that HP’s most powerful and expandable workstation—the HP Z800 Workstation—is now configurable with up to two NVIDIA Tesla graphics processing units (GPUs), another key indicator of the demand being seen for GPUs in the high performance computing (HPC) space.

Enterprises that rely on HP workstations to accelerate their work in fields ranging from scientific research and industrial design, to 3D animation and seismic exploration, can now reap the benefits of NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and tackle demanding computational workloads right at the desktop.

Based on the massively parallel NVIDIA CUDA architecture, Tesla GPUs are taking the high performance computing (HPC) industry by storm, delivering performance increases to critical codes across multiple fields.

In molecular dynamics, AMBER, a public research code with more than 60,000 users, has been written to leverage the massively parallel CUDA architecture to deliver a 50X speed up of simulations. The result is faster scientific insights for researchers. In finance, Numerix and CompatibL have announced CUDA support for a new Counterparty Risk application of their Numerix 7 analytics solution used by over 375 financial institutions. This derivatives pricing application is today experiencing an 18X boost in performance in the calculation of complex pricing models with NVIDIA GPUs.

“The adoption of Tesla GPUs is the fastest of any new processor technology in the history of HPC1,” said Andy Keane, general manager of Tesla business at NVIDIA. “We are delighted to see a leader such as HP begin to ship Tesla GPU-enabled systems into the market and to help accelerate the work of their customers.”

“HP’s workstation customers are professionals at the top of their game, pushing the limits of technology, for more creativity and innovation than ever before,” said Jeff Wood, director of worldwide marketing, Workstations, HP. “The NVIDIA Tesla GPU takes our flagship Z workstations to extreme heights for floating point intensive applications.”
